Under the tree the little boy sat
Not doing this, not doing that.
A leaf floated past – it flipped and it flapped –
And it landed on the grass, small and flat.
From under a bush, a scuffle! A snap!
The boy raised his head and pulled up his cap,
And out of the bush appeareed a cat!
It shook off the twigs, crawled out of the gap,
It tipped and it tapped
And sprung into his lap.
Its tail, like a flame, swished in his face.
Its paws padded and prodded
Til the cat found its place.
It curled into a ball, ginger and round.
And the pair sat together, without a sound.
Just a boy and a cat,
the sky and the ground.
They sat there still and stared and gazed,
Not thinking a thing in the sun-hazed shade.
